Why are water towers structured so mundane and foreign to our landscape?
The Water Tower project is a competition arranged by Merge Studio Lab and asks the question above.
It´s easy for architects and designers to see the beauty of water tanks and the will to keep them and to make more people appreciate this; my suggestion is to get the younger generation to see them. The concept is simple, convert it to something useful. Since these two water tanks are situated in an area with family houses I think it´s a good idea to make the whole space a place for young people to meet. The entire site is turned into a skateboard park made out of concrete. Both water tanks are painted white and the small one is turned into an elevator and a big pool for skating in the bigger one. A bridge is built out of wood to connect the two tanks. The white color of the tank is meant to turn them into neutral icons so that you understand that they are not in use, like an architectural model. Other details such as doors, stairs etc are made out of pine wood. A large roof window is placed in the top and center of the big water tank for daylight to light up the skateboard pool.
The kids are the future!
